Basic erases deficit, makes statement with win against Durango

Benny Gutierrez wasn?t expected to be the Basic High football team?s feature running back Friday night. Then again, on a team of no stars where everyone doing their part is considered the key for success, Gutierrez?s three touchdown runs against host Durango shouldn?t be that big of a surprise.

Summer school

Rory Reid should have owned Sunday's debate with Republican rival Brian Sandoval. Education, his best subject, was the topic of the hour-long contest. His team loaded the high school auditorium with foot-stomping supporters -- who brought an early bit of pep-rally energy. As soon as they got quiet, the event at Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy lapsed into a stupor.

Fremont Street Shuffle

Fremont Street Shuffle

It's Friday night on East Fremont, the block downtown that was the focus of irrational exuberance several years ago at the dawn of the Fremont East Entertainment District. By 10 p.m., the capacity crowd in Don't Tell Mama is being thoroughly entertained by a spikey-haired pianist playing the bar's baby grand. Raucous sing-alongs -- "Friends In Low Places," "Talk Is Cheap," Do You Love Me" -- can be heard from the street outside, but it's one of the only signs of vibrant nightlife on this evening.

New kid on the block

It's hard to say what came first for the soon-to-open Vanguard Lounge: the chicken or the egg. Andrew and Jennifer Wheatley sought to open a fuss-free bar where they themselves would like to hang out. But the couple also got excited by the idea of opening an establishment that would complement other nearby bars and lounges, providing revelers with enough options to keep them in the area for the night. The Wheatleys saw their kind of bar -- and travel-free barhopping -- in cities like San Diego, San Francisco and New York.
