Worldstart Computer Tips 9-3-2010

Quick Tips

Save a Search in Windows 7 Explorer

Did you know that you can save a search string in Windows 7? It’s really helpful if you commonly search for one kind of item on your hard drive, so you don’t have to go typing it in every time.

Here’s how you do it.

First, open up Windows Explorer. You can either click Start>Computer, or type in Windows Explorer in your Search Box located above the Start button.

In the upper-right had portion of the Windows Explorer window, you’ll see a box where you can type your search in. I typed in jpeg, to search for all the jpeg files on my computer. (obviously you can use your own search term).

Once your results pop up, click the Save search button, which is located on the left side of the Windows Explorer window.

Another windows will pop up and ask you to name your saved search. I just click Save.

Now you’ll see your saved search under the Favorites section in the left column of Windows Explorer. You can click on it at anytime to automatically start your custom search!

How Neat!

"This Has Gotta Be The Most Comfortable Mouse On The Planet!"

Finally - A Mouse Quality Mouse That Feels Natural!!

Kiss Wrist Strain Goodbye For Good!!

Don't Believe Us? Check Out The Video!!

Don't Pay $80 Somewhere Else For A Vertical Mouse!

We've Got 'Em Today For Just $10.97!!

Limited Quantity!!

Are you sick and tired of your wrist killing you every time you use your mouse? If so, you're in luck today!

I've found the most ergonomically correct mouse on the planet! The Sky Vertical Optical Mouse is gonna be your wrist's new best friend.

With this baby - you can help to eliminate that wrist strain that so many of us suffer from after hours of use on our computer!!

Yes, most mice do have some sort of curved design that make them "look" ergonomic, but the truth is - those curves don't do much to help prevent wrist strain. Don't believe me that? Just check out the video below:

Yup, as you can see this mouse supports your hand in a relaxed neutral position, almost as if you're reaching out to shake someone's hand. The grip is the same as with an ordinary mouse... simply turned sideways, so your wrist is comfortable.

I know you're thinking...this thing looks awkward, so there's gotta be some sort of learning curve involved. Nope - the buttons are operated by the same fingers as an ordinary mouse, so virtually no retraining is necessary. This mouse even has a fantastic three button design with a scroll wheel that acts as the third button!

This mouse is pure bliss for any wrist!

This optical mouse has got incredible tracking too! With the Sky Vertical Optical Mouse you get the best of both worlds - comfort and efficiency!!

Set up is a breeze too! With this mouse you have absolutely nothing to worry about because it is truly plug and play. There is nothing to install! Just plug this bad boy into any USB port and you're good to go!!

Heck, I saw other optical vertical mice online selling for over $80!! The comfort must be worth that price, but here at WorldStart we were able to score you one heck of a deal!

Your cost is just $10.97 and US shipping is FREE!!! We've only got 80 of these available, so you'll want to sprint to the store to grab yours before they're gone! Don't say I didn't warn you!!

http://store.worldstart.com/product/6455

PS - The price is headed up to $18.97 tonight at 11:59pm, CST...if there are even any left.

You Won't Believe The Deal!

THE Hottest Item We've Ever Seen!

WOW!! This is SOOOO exciting! We just found your computer's new BEST FRIEND!! You are absolutely gonna LOVE this - It's the BAFO File Transfer Cable and it's totally gonna change your computing world - FOREVER! It's the ONE accessory EVERY computer user positively MUST-HAVE!!

See, we've heard about you and it's no secret - You need to get files from one computer to another! Only problem is getting the files from one place to another can be as frustrating as riding your bike across the Grand Canyon!

I mean, don't you just hate it when...

6 You get a brand new machine and your photos, music, and documents are all trapped on your old computer
5 You have a desktop and a laptop but sharing files between them is a complete nightmare
4 You and a friend want to swap files, but there just isn't an easy way
3 You have more than one computer in the house, and you'd like to get files from one to the other

Bottom line - You're gonna need to get files from one computer to another sooner or later!

Sure there's lots of ways to do it - and they all fall under "hard and miserable"! You could spend your afternoon burning CDs, emailing the files to yourself (please tell me you don't do that), or grabbing an Ethernet cable and networking the computers together.

7

Yeah, that didn't sound very good to me either. Come ON! Your time is WAY more valuable than that!! Right?

Join us here in this decade doin' it the EASY WAY...

Grab the amazing BAFO File Transfer Cable! It effortlessly networks your two computers together with just a cable - all automatic!

I looked up the word "easy" in the dictionary and I think I saw a picture of the BAFO File Transfer Cable!

How's it work?

Simple! Just plug one end into each computer's USB port - you're over half way done! That's right - if you can use a USB plug - YOU'RE already an expert! EASY!

Oh, and you'll absolutely love this - once you plug in, a friendly "Windows Explorer" style window automatically pops open so you can quickly drag and drop your files from one computer to another! That's really it! So easy it ought to be illegal!

YESSSSS!! This is works back and forth with everything from Win 98 right up to Windows 7 - talk about great compatibility!!!

1

Now, please note that these are USB 1.1, but no worries - this baby will get the job done! If you have just a handful of files you want transfered, this will take no time at all. If you have some larger files, you can just start the transfer and go grab a cup of coffee or lunch and all your files should be transfered when you return.

Without a DOUBT - this is the one accessory NO computer user should be without! Just imagine - next time you need to transfer documents, loads of photos, tons of music - it can all be done with this little cable! Oh, and you are in for a real TREAT when you upgrade to your next computer! You know ALL those files you need to get from one machine to another? Yup, use this cable, sit back, and relax! It's done baby!!

You and I BOTH know you've gotta be crazier than an outhouse rat to sit there trying to copy all your data to CDs or flash drives - or worse - trying to network two computers together just to get your data moved!

If you're ever, in your life, going to buy another computer YOU need this!! Heck, if you're ever going to transfer a batch of files from one computer to another you need this!

Best computer accessory. EVER.

PLUS...

YOU get a deal so smokin' hot you should need a permit from the fire dept.!

Today only, you can get this for just $8.97 and US shipping is FREE! Oh, and take it from me - once you get your hands on this bad boy you'll be patting yourself on the back for grabbin' it!! It's THAT good!

http://store.worldstart.com/product/6453

A word of warning though - this was a VERY limited quantity buyout, so once these are gone, we can't get more. Don't get left out in the cold - GRAB this deal today!

Computers 101

Austin asks :
Is there a way to back-up Windows updates (in my case, for Windows XP) to a CD, so if I ever have to format and re-install, I don't have to re-download everything?

Windows updates is a service by Microsoft which helps you to install the latest Windows components, hotfixes, security fixes, software upgrades e.g. Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer and so on. Security updates or critical updates eliminate vulnerability to known malware and security exploits.

Usually, updates are handled automatically via the Windows Update service, but there can be situations when you would want to store a local copy of Windows updates, so that you can install these updates on a computer without an internet connection. Another advantage of using a local copy is that when you format your computer, you do not have to download all the updates from scratch. You can install all the necessary service packs and other basic security fixes quickly.

Following are the steps involved to save a local copy of Windows updates in your computer’s hard disk, on a removable drive or in a CD/DVD:

1.First download Windows Update Downloader and install it on your computer.

2.Go to this page and select the operating system installed on your computer. Then download the corresponding updates list, as shown in the following image:

Make sure you choose the correct platform for your operating system. Choosing a different platform will not work.

3.Once you have downloaded the updates list and installed the application, you are ready to go. Run the Windows updates downloader and you will see the following screen:

Click “Ok” to continue.

4.Now double click on the updates list file and you will see a message window as “Compressed UL file installed”. Click “OK”.

Note: If you get an error message like, “Warning, .NET framework component is not installed”, you have to install the .NET framework first. Use this link to download and install the latest version of .NET framework from the Microsoft website.

5.Once you have clicked the UL file, return to the Windows updates downloader window and you will see a list of basic windows updates listed.

6.Choose the features you want to download and select the corresponding checkboxes. If you want to use these updates every time you format your system, it’s recommended to choose all the updates which includes service packs, Internet Explorer, critical upgrades, Windows Media Player, .Net framework an so on.

7.Click on the “Change” button and choose a folder in your computer where the files will be saved. Do not save the files in the operating system partition, choose a different partition (if possible) instead.

8.You are good to go. Now click the “Download” button and all the updates will be downloaded in the local folder specified by you.

Depending upon the size of the updates, it may take some time for the downloads to finish. Do not close the application window or disconnect from the internet while the files are downloading.

9.When the download is complete, open the folder and you will see all the files required to install Windows update on your computer.

10.To install these updates, double click each file and Windows will install the updates automatically. You will have to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Now you can burn all the files in a CD or a DVD and install the updates on any computer.

Microsoft Office: See It From A Different Angle

Do you draw and use shapes in the MS Office Suite programs?

I just love those little AutoShapes for highlighting the really important stuff. But... have you ever wished that you could use it at a slightly different angle? You know, a little something in your document, spreadsheet, presentation or message that isn't plain old horizontal or vertical? Something that really catches the eye.

Well, if you've ever wished for that extra bit of control over your shapes then check out Worldstart today!

Tip of the Day

Note: Video may contain additional information not found in the written text.

Single Click to Open

For quite some time, the norm has been for computer users to double click every time they need to open something on their computer. Whether it be computer files, music files, documents, etc. For example, if you would like to listen to a music file on your PC, you double click on it to run the music, right? But, in all actuality, we can make life easier by assigning a single click pattern to our Windows system.

By single click, I mean really single clicking on items to open them, so in the end, we will save thousands of clicks from now on. We will be able to open any file with a single click of the mouse. This can save us time and it makes our clicking more productive and enjoyable. It also will help your mouse to live longer as a result of less clicking.

Learn how to do it here!

Holy Toledo! These babies have been flyin' off our shelves! Better grab yours, before they're gone!

What!?!!

A Flashlight That Doesn't Use Batteries?!?!

Never Replace A Bulb Either!?!

Squeeze Light

This Durable Flashlight Is Gonna Save You Big Bucks!!

This Is The Last Flashlight You'll Ever Need To Buy!!

Read On...

Think about it...when do we typically use flashlights? Emergency situations. Usually you never know when you're gonna need use your flashlight next.

So what ALWAYS seems to happen? We store 'em away until we need 'em! Think about it, how many times have you went to get your flashlight, turned it on - and NOTHING?!?!

What's even worse is when you haven't used it in SO LONG that the batteries have leaked and ruined the flashlight!

What if I told you that there was a flashlight that didn't require batteries??

Well, I found just that - An LED Squeeze Flashlight THAT DOESN'T NEED BATTERIES!!

How it works is simple:

When you need light, just unlock the handle, give it a couple of squeezes and voila...you've got light from 3 blindin' bright LED bulbs!! Yowza!

The 3 bright LEDs will stay lit for hours!

This uses a squeezable hand charger...no batteries are required! No more paying for replacement batteries or extra batteries that just sit around and go bad. Just think about how many batteries have we all thrown away cuz they just went past the expiration date?

Since this Squeeze Light uses LED bulbs, that means they're bright...waaaay brighter than an old incandescent bulb flashlight! Plus, they last for an incredibly long time...much longer than the standard bulbs!

So you'll save money (and aggravation) by not having to replace bulbs or batteries!

This is an absolute must-have for cars, boats, offices...and it's small enough to keep in the glove box or purse.

Just think...these are environmentally friendly and inexpensive!

We've got these on special so you can pick up a few of these and keep 'em where you need 'em. Grab these right now for just $7.97 and U.S. Shipping is FREE!!!

http://store.worldstart.com/product/5049

PS - Keep one in each car and even in a couple of rooms in the house! At this price they're cheaper than buying batteries!

PPS - The price will increase to $14.97 tonight at 11:59pm, CST!

Quick Tips

Disable AutoScroll in Mozilla Firefox

So, you’re clicking around, trying to find the end of the Internet, when you accidentally click your middle mouse button and this pops up:

This means AutoScroll has been enabled and all you have to do now is move your mouse around to browse the page. I’ve never been a big fan of it, though, so I went hunting around for how to turn it off.

Here’s how:

In Firefox, go to Tools>Options. Make sure the Advanced icon is selected and that you’re on the General Tab.

Under the Browsing header, un-check Use autoscrolling. That’s all there is to it!

If you ever want to turn it back on again, just follow the steps above and re-check Use autoscrolling.

A word of warning though - this was a VERY limited quantity buyout, so once these are gone, we can't get more. Don't get left out in the cold - GRAB this deal today!

Computers 101

Sandy in FL asks:

How do I delete stuff off my Flash Drive?

Thanks for the great question Sandy!

It is very common to have a flash drive sitting around, whether it be in your house or even on a key chain. They are great to hold your pictures, files, or music, but it doesn’t take long to fill them up. Thankfully, it is easy to get files on a flash drive and just as easy to get them off. Read on to learn how you can give your flash drive some space.

The first thing you need to do is connect your flash drive to your computer by inserting it into a USB port. In a few seconds, your computer should recognize the flash drive. If the flash drive does not automatically open, click on Start and Computer and look for the flash drive under Devices with Removable Storage.

Click on the drive and a window will open showing the folders and files that are on the flash drive. To delete an individual file simply right-click on it and select Delete. Once you have done this, a window will pop up asking Are you sure you wish to delete this item(s)? Click Yes.

If you want to delete all the files on the flash drive, hold down the Ctrl key and press A on the keyboard to highlight every file and folder. Right click on any one of them and select Delete.

If you want to delete certain folders and files, hold down the Ctrl key and click on each file/folder you want to delete to select them. When you are finished right click on any one of them and select Delete.

If you want to save the files onto your computer you can open a second Computer window and drag and drop files from your flash drive into a folder on the second Computer. To do this, click Start and Computer. Click the C: drive. Keep this window open and click on the second window that shows your flash drive files. Now you can drag the files from your flash drive into any place on your hard drive in the second window.

You can also format your flash drive and completely erase everything on it. To do this right click on the drive and select Format.

When you are finished deleting the files off your flash drive find the Safely Remove Hardware icon in your system tray in the bottom right hand corner (by the clock). This icon will have a left facing green arrow on it. Double click on the icon and a window will open showing your flash drive. Click on it once to highlight it, click the Stop button, and wait for the message Safe to Remove Hardware. You can now safely remove your flash drive from the USB port. If you do not do this before you disconnect your flash drive, you can corrupt your files.

OpenOffice Calc: Titles Belong in the Center of the Table!

I see this all the time at school – students are forever giving me tables set up in spreadsheets where the table title is either left justified over the table columns or placed haphazardly “sort-of” in the center of the table. They just love to try to center titles by using a bunch of spaces or by putting the title in a cell that's as close as they could get.

Either way it just looks wrong to me – especially when centering information over several columns is so very simple to do!

If this is you then you're going to love this trick. Jump over to Worldstart to check it out!

File Check Boxes in Windows 7

When you're selecting a bunch of files in Windows 7, what's your method? Do you drag a box around them and hope you don't ensnare anything extra? Do you hold Ctrl and click file after file?

Or do you just use check boxes?

How do I get those, you ask? Well, Follow me!

TVneto

Would you like to watch live TV from your computer? I must admit, I don’t need to since I have access to a television, but if I had a laptop and wasn’t home it would be an awesome option. Did I mention that you can do it for free?

What you do is download the bar – either by clicking the girl talking or the Get Started button. It should auto install, and then you can watch TV from the bar by choosing a show.

The bar has the following options: TV&Video, Hot Shows, Radio, and Tools. TV & Video lets you select local stations, Hot Shows will show you a listing of popular TV shows, the Radio lets you play music through your browser, and Tools lets you manage all sorts of things!

If you run into any problems they have a comprehensive Help section, and if you absolutely don’t like the bar you can remove it anytime. The downloader comes with and uninstaller already packaged into it.

Check it out and give it a try today!

Quick Tips
Up, Down, Left, Right!

Windows 7 has quite a few neat tricks up its sleeve! Today’s tip is not only useful, but fun to mess around with, too!

So, open up a program (just about any one will do), and hold your Windows key ( the Windows key is the one located between your Ctrl and Alt keys on your keyboard and has the Windows logo emblazoned on it).

As I said, hold your Windows key and press one of the direction arrows on your keyboard.

Windows Key + Left Arrow – Snaps the current window towards the left side of the screen.

Windows Key + Right Arrow – Snaps the current window towards the right side of the screen.

Windows Key + Up – Maximizes the current Window.

Windows Key + Down – Send the current Window to a compact state. Press again to minimize. Note: Once the window is minimized, you need to click on it again if you want to access it.

Remember: This trick is only for Windows 7 users. Everyone else is just going to have to use their mouse, I guess!

Computers 101

Michael Asks: I am so tired of logging in every time I go to use my home computer. Is there some easy way to turn this off? How do I do this in Windows 7?

A:
I had this same problem when I first started using my Windows 7 computer, so I know exactly where you're coming from. Basically, when you first install Vista or 7 and start using it, you are required to enter in a password for your account. But after that, you're not really given a choice to remove the password if you don't want it. You're just sort of stuck typing it in every time and that can get old rather quickly!

Now, if you're not the only one who uses your computer, it's sometimes nice to have a password. It is a good security feature and it helps to keep all of the different accounts separate from each other. But what if you're the only one who ever uses your computer? In that case, I say you should be able to get rid of the password prompt if you want. Don't you agree?! Well, you're in luck, because that's exactly what we're going to cover today. It's a very simple and fast procedure, so let's take a look and see what we've got!

If you'd like to bypass the Windows Vista and 7 log on process and remove your password, just follow these steps:

1.) Go to Start, Control Panel.

2.) Click on the User Accounts and Family Safety link.

3.) Next, click on the User Accounts link.

4.) Under the "Make changes to your user account" section, click on the Remove Your Password link for your account.

5.) On the next screen that comes up, enter in your current password.

6.) Click on the Remove Password button to confirm everything.

7.) Close out of all the open windows and restart your computer. That will allow you to test the system to make sure your password really was removed.

That's it! From now on, when you start up your Vista or 7 computer, you will no longer have to worry about a password. Isn't that a great feeling?!

MS Office
MS Word 2007 & 2010: Including Path & File Names in Your Headers or Footers

If you've ever looked at a hard copy of a document and wondered "Now where did I save this?" then you want to know this one.

One of the most sure-fire ways to ensure that you know how you saved the file is to include the path (file location) and file name in the header or footer of the document.

With that in mind let's take a look at where we can find such things in our newest versions of MS Word.

Inserting a header or footer would be the first step… Insert Tab of the Ribbon, Header or Footer button then choose a layout.

Once you're in a header or footer you'll now have a Header & Footer Tools Design tab.

Quick and Easy Cd-Rom Drive Controls

Here is a short tutorial on how you can eject or close your CD ROM using desktop shortcuts. Opening or closing the CD tray using these shortcuts can help you out if you have a faulty eject button on your CD ROM drive. You will never need to open windows explorer and right-click the CD ROM drive and then press eject. These two shortcuts will make your tasks easier.

Your browser may not support display of this image.

So here is how we can create the two shortcuts. First we will create two different shortcuts; one for opening and another for closing the tray. Next we will assign hot keys to them so that we can use them just by pressing some key combination on our keyboard. In the final step we will add two icons to the shortcuts to make them look meaningful.

1. Download NirCmd and save it anywhere on your hard disk. For ease of use let's suppose we have it in the folder Nirsoft on drive C. So the path to the nircmd.exe file is C:\Nirsoft\nircmd.exe.

NOTE: The package downloaded will be a zip file. So you will need a zip tool to unzip it. If you have any zip tool already installed on your PC you can use that or you can try Winrar which is a free tool. Download Winrar here.

Q:
I read that Google is tracking my interests for advertising purposes. Is this true and should I stay away from Google?

A:
This is a great question and I will be happy to let everyone know how this works.

It is true that Google announced a new technology for Internet advertising that they call Interest-based Advertising. As I'm sure you can guess, this allows Google to know what kinds of products you are interested in. It will then allow them to display advertising to you that meets your interests. They figure that if they can show you ads that you are interested in, they will make more money.

So, now that you know what it is, let me explain how it works and why it is not a threat to you.

Quick Tips
Windows Character Map

Have you ever needed a special character? No, I'm not talking about phoning up Charlie Brown and asking him to referee your kid's soccer game -I'm talking about a special text character! Sure, there's a bunch of Alt codes you can use to get results, but if you're like me, you need a more visual approach.

So, in Windows 7 or Vista hit Start and type in Character Map in your search box. Now either hit Enter or double-click the Character Map icon that appears in the results.

This window should pop up.

From here, simply specify your font at the top and locate the special character you want to insert and double-click it. All of your selections will appear in the Characters to copy box, so all you have to do is hit the copy button when you’re done and then paste (CTRL+V) into your chosen program.

It’s just that easy!

Now You Too Can See In The Dark!

Classy Light That Will Lead The Way...

The Newest Innovation In Fluorescent Light Technology!

Turn It On, Turn It Off - OR- Turn It On Auto!

This Is Gonna Save You Tons Of Money!!

My 68 Year Old Grandma From California Reveals Hidden Secret To Staying Safe, Looking Classy, And Saving Money...

3.5 Second Overview: It's the newest innovation in Plug-In Fluorescent Light technology. This convenient Plug-In Light provides bright, indirect, energy-efficient lighting wherever there's an electric outlet! Use it as a standard switch on/off night light, or set it to turn on automatically as daylight decreases and off as daylight increases...

Picture this: Every winter, a few weeks after the new year, I go to California to visit my Grandmother. She lives in beautiful Palm Springs (as you can imagine it's nice to be there coming from old cold Ohio)... it's something new, it's something fresh and above all -it's warm!

Getting back on track, my grandmother lives in a condo there. It's a classy looking place (for a classy looking lady)... She may be 68 years old but she keeps the place looking sharp 24/7.

Though I noticed that there was something different this year, something magical. She had plugged in these fluorescent lights all around the house. Not everywhere, just in key areas. They matched well with the walls (any color)... and they plugged into only one outlet leaving the other one open.

They didn't take up too much space, and best off all they had a serious beneficial use, which was:

They kept my Grandmother safe. You see, at night they turn on and light up the hallways. She has one in every bathroom, which I thought was really cool and convenient! They really work great and it probably keeps my grandmother from maybe tripping over something in dark areas.

She is highly capable though, and she probably got them for her guests. You see, she lives alone, so family and friends from all over the country come visit her. It's not their (her family and friends) turf, and the fluorescent lighting makes the whole house feel more cozy - more like home to all her out-of-town guests.

My grandmother raised 13 healthy kids (I-kid-you-not!)... so she knows a thing or two about SAVING MONEY! She even told me herself, one of the reasons she bought this particular fluorescent plug-in light was because it was so energy efficient. Only used 6 watts and even has the option to turn in on or off, but even more importantly - you have the option to turn it on auto. On auto it automatically turns on at dusk and off during daylight - pure genius!!

Try it for free for 60 days. If this product doesn't light up your world, send it back for a complete no hassle refund. Order now for only $9.97 by clicking on the link below!

http://store.worldstart.com/product/6359

P. S. Price goes up to $16.97 tonight at 11:59pm, CST (08-31-2010).

Absolutely Mind-Blowin' Card Reader Deal!

Just $6.97!!! Really!

WOW!! I Think I am Speechless!!!

Now That's A Price That'll Really Make You Smile!!! :-D

Only 100 Available - HURRY!!!!!

If I had to name my top favorite gadgets, card readers would definitely be on the list! I have so many SD cards, that a card reader is the only way I view what is stored on any given card. I just find them so cool and convenient. And they are so much easier to use than a messy cord. However, this amazing card reader really caught my attention, and I know it will catch yours too!

How do they work? Just pop in your camera's memory card and a folder will open showing you all your photos! Just drag and drop the photos to any folder on your computer! Or, to use as a storage device, do just the opposite ~ drag and drop your files from your computer onto the drive! I LOVE mine!

Everyone with an SD (secure digital), MMC, or RS card (or any variation thereof) will just LOVE this card reader!!

Think about it, what would be easier- popping out your memory card, sliding it into the card reader, and plugging it into your USB port? Or, finding that cable that came with your device, untangling it (because you know they are always tangled), plugging it into your USB port, transferring your files, then following the cord as you go through the jungle of cords behind your computer, searching for the correct USB port and finally unplugging it? I think that answer is a real no-brainer! Of course, the card reader option is the easiest way to transfer your information from your card to your computer or vice versa!

Next, let's discuss the design! This card reader is extremely compact and lightweight, therefore, making it perfect for anyone on the go!!! And the best part is, this card reader has Plug and Play, allowing it to work on any computer without having to install anything! Better yet, because you can transfer files to and from this card reader, it will work as a flash drive too!!!

Because it uses USB 2.0, this card reader has blistering fast data transfer speed, and will definitely satisfy all your data transfer needs. This is one that you just have to check out!!! I just adore it, and for the price of just $6.97 and US Shipping is Free, you will adore yours too!

http://store.worldstart.com/product/3250

P.S. Unfortunately, we only have a limited quantity of these in stock, and for that low price, I know they are going to just fly out the door! Order yours now, before they are gone!!!

PPS - The price WILL increase to $12.97 at 11:59pm, CST tonight

Computers 101

Mark H. asks:

I have Windows Media Player 11. There used to be a place at the top where I could click Play. I can't find it anywhere. Where is it?

A. Hi, Mark! You would think it would be right there all the time, wouldn't you? After all, everybody has to use it.

It's all about options. If you play a lot of music on your player, you might want to have the Play option displayed all of the time. If all you do is burn CDs from your player, then you may not want it shown since you don't need it all of the time. And of course, there's always the appearance of the program. It's all in what you want.

There are two ways to display the menu (where you can click on Play) on your player.

The first is the Classic Menu. This is where your menu is visible all of the time so that you don't have to do anything when you want to play something, you just left-click on Play and display the options.

This is the left half of the taskbar of Windows Media Player 11.0.

image

The second way of viewing Windows Media Player is by hiding the menu. You can access it; it just isn't visible all of the time. The way to access the menu is to go up to your taskbar (the bar that extends all the way across the top) and right-click on any empty area in the taskbar and the menu will pop up with options for you to customize the player to your liking.

This is Windows Media Player (11.0) when the menu is hidden.

image

Since you can't find Play at the top, Mark, your menu is obviously hidden. There a couple of ways to make it visible.

Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and the menu will pop up (just like before). To enable the Classic (visible) menu, go to Show Classic Menus (it's at the bottom) and click on it to put a check mark next to it. Now your menu is visible again.

This is what Windows Media Player looks like after I click Show Classic Menus.

image

The other way to display the Classic Menu view when it's hidden is to right-click an empty area of the taskbar and when the menu pops up, instead of going down to click on Show Classic Menus, you point to View to highlight it and then click go down the list (fifth option down) and click on Show Classic Menus. Either way displays the menu with Play in it – and it will stay on top.

image

Either option will produce this:

image

No looking for Play anymore!

Thanks for writing, Mark!

Tip of the Day

What is Social Networking?

I was thinking the other day how much and how quickly the internet changes. Social networking, for example, has exploded with new ways to interact that are introduced almost every day.

For those of you who are new to this concept (I didn’t even know what blog meant until three months after “everybody” was doing it), social networking is when people build online (usually non-local) communities (Flickr, Facebook, MySpace, etc.) to reach out to others who share the same interests.

There are a lot of ways to socially “connect” to people on the internet. You have to start somewhere, so here, in my humble opinion, are the top four “must-knows” of social networking.

Blog
image

It seems you cannot go anywhere without seeing the term “blog”.

A blog is a contraction for the term web log. It is basically an online journal that can be edited, read, or written in. Entries are usually posted in reverse-chronological order. If you submit one of these entries (post your thoughts), you are blogging.

Here’s something else: If you are passionate about something and want to discuss it with other people on the web, you could consider opening your own blog. Head on over to a blog setup site (blogger.com is the most popular, but there are others) and set up your own for free. They will guide you through all of the steps to get your very own blog up and running on the web. There are also other websites to go to that give great tips and advice for beginner bloggers.

How to grip your camera for better photography

Digital photography has become accessible to all through cameraphones, point and shoots and of course, DSLRs. But there's one thing most beginners are unaware of: camera shake caused by wrong posture and holding of camera. These tips will tell you how to grip your camera for shake-free images and a better photography experience.

Wrong Way to hold the camera

Right way to hold the camera

Study your camera
With so many cameras on the market and one brand trying to one up the next, there are manufacturers who have understood that providing a sturdy grip makes more sense to beginners and professionals alike. If you are in the market for cameras, go for one that has a good grip. These could be in the form of grooves and thumbnails where you place your fingers or a rough surface, so you grip the camera right and don't drop it. The best way to judge this is to pick up the camera and hold it in any number of ways to see what works for you. Similarly, if you already have a camera, study it carefully and see what grip works best for your camera that enables steadier images. Most times, we fail to observe such minute details and spoil our photography.

Plugged In

Welcome to Plugged In, a website devoted to bringing you family friendly movie, music, and video game reviews. This site offers you a way of making sure that the stuff your kids see, hear, and play are something you’d approve of. They even review rated R movies that are target towards teens.

The site is very easy to navigate. You'll find a search field right on the main page so if you're looking for something specific you can find it quickly. Along that that same navigation strip you'll find the categories: Home, Movies, Videos, Music, TV, and Games.

On the main page you can find featured articles, polls, blog entries, and so much more. I like that when you mouse over the bottom left featured items that little chat bubbles pop up and gives you a little bit of an intro to what that article is about.

I know that my parents were careful about what we were exposed to as kids, and I think that it gives me a real appreciation for choosing what I want to watch today. I’m glad that there are sites out here like this that are helping parents keep up with all the media their kids are consuming! Check it out today!

Quick Tips

Hide Desktop Icons in Windows 7

I like to keep a relatively clean desktop. I have my frequently used icons situated just where I need them and I try to limit my amount of desktop shortcuts, but sometimes that’s just not enough for me. I mean, when I first installed Windows 7, all I had was a recycle bin icon and not much else to speak of!

How can one get that level of desktop cleanliness ever again?

Simple! Just Right-Click a blank area of your desktop and choose View, then un-check Show desktop icons.

Computers 101

Rachel asks:

I went to delete a file the other day and it just deleted the file without asking! Do you know why it would do this?

A. Hi, Rachel! I had that happen to me once and I thought I had lost the file; I about had a heart attack.

Somehow your settings got changed (I never did find out how mine did). Here's how to get the right settings back:

First, right-click on your Recycle Bin and left-click on Properties.

Your Recycle Bin Properties box will pop up; it is multi-tabbed; each tab is for each hard drive you have in your computer. There is one tab that is all-inclusive, and that is the Global tab. Click on that.

If you look at the box, you will see Display delete confirmation dialog at the bottom with a box next to it; click on the box to put a check mark in it. Then click on Apply, and then click on OK.

And that's it! Next time you delete a file, you can make sure that you want to!

Thanks for writing!

MS Office
MS PowerPoint 2007 & 2010: Make the Slide Fit the Information

Have you ever put together a PowerPoint presentation where it seems that the slides have way too much unused space on the left and right sides?
I know that when I put together presentations for teaching my students tax forms the slides begin to look like this:

landscape slide with big margins

In order to have the whole form from top to bottom it’s reduced in size to the point where they can’t really see what’s going on… not good.
So, how can we fix this?

Tip of the Day
Speed Up Those Drives

If you didn't know, Windows Vista operates external hard drives that are connected via USB differently than internal drives. Write caching is disabled so that you can safely remove the drive at almost any time. This is a great feature for USB flash drives that are frequently inserted and removed from your computer. But, if you have a large hard drive in an external enclosure that you never disconnect from your computer, write caching is also disabled, which can decrease performance. So, let's change that around a little, shall we?!

Today, I'm going to show you a tweak that will increase the performance of your external hard drive by turning the write cache back on, as well as, activating an advanced performance. Let’s get started!

1.) First, in Vista, right click on the Computer icon on your desktop and select Manage.

Amanda's Coolsite
The Real Damage

This is a really interesting calculator that allows you to calculate the real damage you're doing to your finances when you buy something with credit.

You'll find the calculator on the right side of the page. You enter the cost of what you're buying, then fill out what your interest rate is, the balance that you’re carrying on that card, and how many payments you make a month. Next, click the What the Damage button above the table you just filled in. It will then calculate how much the item you want to purchase will really cost you in the long run.

The point of this is to help you make better decisions about what you're buying. If a $75 dollar pair of jeans is going to end up costing you $224.63 in the long run would you still buy them? (I used the interest rate of 23.94%, and a balance of $400 with 1 monthly payment to come up with those figures.) I certainly wouldn’t be buying those jeans!

I love that you can figure in multiple payments because a lot of people make more than one payment a month when they are trying to pay down their credit, so now you can figure that in!

I think this calculator is awesome! I hope you'll bookmark it today and use it to help you weigh your purchasing power.

Quick Tips
Make Phone Calls in Gmail

You can actually feel Skype quaking in their boots. Earlier this week Google announced that users would be able to make phone calls to any traditional number right from the Gmail interface.

Naturally, I had to check this out. I mean, it’s free after all, as long as you’re calling someone in the United States or Canada, and the promise of international calls billed as low as 2¢ a minute doesn’t hurt, either.

So here’s how to do it:

Log into your Gmail account, and under the Chat section on the left side you’ll notice a new option that says Call phone. Click on it

Upon clicking it, a traditional phone dial pad will pop up. You’ll need to install the Google Chat and Video plug-in for your browser before you can make a call, but there's a link provided right in the call interface and it doesn't take too long to set up.

After you've set that up, make sure you’ve got a microphone hooked up to your computer, input a number for someone you’d like to call and hit the Call button. It rings, acts and sounds exactly like a regular phone call, and the best part is: it’s free!!

Head over to your Gmail account and check it out today!!

It's no wonder this is our #1 Selling speaker system!! We're giving them away for just $12.55!!

Whoever Invented These Babies Should Receive The Nobel Prize!!

Now These Are Some Smart Speakers!!!

Forget All Those Extra Power Cords!

These Are USB Powered!

Incredible Sound Too - And A Drop-Dead Price Shocker!

2-Piece USB Multimedia Speaker Set

Now this is what I call a set of speakers!!! These are the most exciting sets of speakers you'll ever own! I know, I know, what the heck could possibly have me goin' crazy over a set of speakers? Well, I have had a little too much caffeine this morning, but that's every morning!! These bad boys are USB powered speakers!

What's so special about USB Speakers?

Well, ya know how your computer speakers either need to be plugged in somewhere (adding yet ANOTHER cable to get tangled up - and to eat up a spot on your power strip) or they (yuck) have to have batteries? Well, wouldn't it be GREAT if you could get a set of AWESOME sounding speakers that were 100% USB powered? Think about it - why mess with power cords - or even worse, replacing batteries every few months - when you could simply power your speaker through your USB port?

Heck, a bigger question is why didn't someone think of this sooner?!?!?

Now, being USB powered is brilliant, but if the speakers don't sound good, what's the point, right? Well, no need to worry!
I tested these out and they are WAY better then the speakers I've been using at home! You can BET I'll be hooking these bad boys up to BOTH my home computers! Yeah, they really are THAT good!

They have a great range of sound and the clarity is crystal clear! They sound a TON better than the speakers that came with your computer, trust me. Oh, and if you have speakers built into your monitor instead of regular speakers, you gotta give these a try! Wait till you hear what you've been missing!

Hey, and you can't beat the deal - we're talkin' a mind-bending price of just $12.55 and US shipping is FREE!  For this price, you just gotta give these a shot - you'll be glad you did!

http://store.worldstart.com/product/5328

PS - Seriously, these speakers are such an ingenious invention!! Trust me - you can't go wrong with these bad boys!!

Computers 101

Tom from Oakland, CA asks: "When saving a picture, Windows always calls it a bitmap. How can I change it so it saves as a jpeg?"

The real question here isn't how your computer is SAVING the picture, rather in what format the picture was UPLOADED.

Many times, website creators will use .bmp rather than .jpg or .jpeg, simply because the quality of the picture is higher. A bitmap (.bmp) is an uncompressed photo, whereas a jpeg is a compressed format, which means some quality sacrifice. It may not be obvious to the naked eye, but it IS there.

Your best bet is to save a picture like this in its original format and then use a photo editing program to save it in whatever your preferred format is. I like jpeg because, although it takes up less space than .bmp, it is still a good quality image.

Here's a .bmp of a mandrill that I found through Google images.

My options for saving this are .bmp or “all files”. The latter isn't recommended, because you are not specifically defining an extension.

Once you've saved the image, open it in your photo editor. In this example, I'm using Paint, because I know that everyone has Paint.

When you open the image, it will look like this.

You can use the tools at the left of the image to tweak or modify the picture however you want. Above the image you can see your color palette. Now you simply click "file" and then "save as" to choose your format of choice.

Another way to save a picture is to use screen capture. To do this, make sure that your image looks the way that you will want to save it (no pointers over the picture, etc.,) and then, while holding down the "ctrl" key, press "print screen/sysrq" on your keyboard. This will save the entire contents of your screen as an image on your computer's clipboard.

Open Paint, and click "edit" and then "paste" to import the image. Use the "select" function (the box at the upper left of your toolbar) to frame the section of the image that you want to save.

Click "image" and then "crop" to get rid of any extraneous information, and then use "save as" to save your new and improved image.

Hope this helps.
